Shears not cutting like the used to? Come by our shop and have them honed while you wait, or you can send them to us! Barbershops and Salons in the Portland, OR area may also schedule mobile sharpening services to be performed by a Portland Razor Co. bladesmith at your shop!
All honing services are performed by hand on traditional Japanese waterstones. This process results in the finest possible edge with the least amount of wear and tear on your blades, meaning your tools are safer to use, more functional, and longer-lasting than if they were sharpened with mechanized sharpeners.

What can be sharpened:
If there is any doubt as to whether or not your shears can be sharpened, please email us before purchasing a Sharpening Service.
We can sharpen/hone any shears in good condition and made by a reputable manufacturer, both beveled edge (German-style) and convex grind (Japanese-style).
What you can expect:
Your shears will be thoroughly inspected for tension, alignment, grind, and wear & tear. If it has any harmful surface rust, we will oil it and buff out the rust before sharpening; rust which has caused deep pitting cannot be removed and can negatively affect your shears' performance.
Edges with uneven wear, dings or chips may require some reshaping and we will do our best to remove the minimum amount of material required to restore the edge.
Shears will be tensioned optimally for contact between the blades.
Replacement parts (washers, bearings, finger rests, rings etc) are provided at-cost; we do not charge additional service fees for replacement and installation
Your shears will be sharpened by hand on traditional Japanese waterstones. The type and quality of scissor determine how fine a grit we use (usually 1k to 12K grit). No mechanized sharpeners will be used.
Once the shears are cutting and pass inspection, they will be sanitized and oiled with camelia oil before packing for return shipping.
*We do our best to research and match the honing practices of the original manufacturer. Please be familiar with your manufacturer's warranty and repairs policy before sending your shears to us.
How to have your shears sharpened at Portland Razor Co.:
Indicate the number of shears you would like serviced, and add them to your shopping cart.
At checkout, please describe your shears in as much detail as possible in the "notes" section. Details such as recent damage and the name of the Maker are helpful.
Clean and dry your shears, secure them in the closed position, and wrap them in bubble wrap. A zip-lock is also recommended.
Print your email receipt and enclose it with your shears.

Your shears will be in the shop for up to 14 days. Once sharpening is complete, you will receive an email confirmation and a tracking number. If you order a honing service with other products, we will ship them all together (we will hold your entire order if one or more items are backordered).
Return shipping will be paid at checkout: USPS flat rate for domestic orders and international orders. The checkout price does not include shipping to our shop. If you would like to ship insured for values over $50, you must indicate the dollar value and you will be invoiced for the difference in shipping.
Local customers also have the option of choosing "Local Pick Up" and can drop off/pick up their shears in person. If "Local Pick Up" is selected, please drop-off during our open hours.
If your shears cannot be sharpened for any reason, we will refund the cost of the service minus return shipping.
